English: The FN 5.7×28mm is a small-caliber, high-velocity cartridge designed and manufactured by FN Herstal in Belgium. It was developed in conjunction with the FN P90 personal defense weapon (PDW) and FN Five-seven pistol.
The overall compactness of the round (28mm in length) makes it practical to use in an actual pistol-sized frame, and still have decent velocity. The size of the round also allows a capacity of 20 rounds in a single magazine, whereas the 9mm would have maybe 15, and the.45acp would have maybe 8 or 9 rounds in a similarly-sized pistol. While the 40-grain Sporting load is adequate for self-defense — with performance in ballistic medium similar to that of the 9mm — the 5.7×28 is most effective when topped by a 27-grain bullet. That is what the 5.7 was originally designed to launch. Kel-Tec have stated PDF Link that a 40 grain.22 WMR round should reach a velocity of 1230 fps from the 4.3″ barrel of their PMR-30 pistol. This works out to 134.40 ft/lbs of energy.
